Review of Dick Tracy (1990) by Claire T — 01 Dec 2012
Coming a year after 'Batman' this film borrows heavily from that film, using similar set scheme for the city (but not as gothic) and borrowing Danny Elfman for the score. Like that film the hero is a little bland and boring and the film benefits from over-the-top villains, especially Pacino chewing up the scenery.
The colour scheme works well to remind you of the original comics and although the storyline is very familiar it's a lot of fun trying to recognise all the great actors disguised by their heavy make-up.
Sondheim contributed the songs and they work well but Madonna isn't a good enough songer to really deliver them and she is probably the weakest thing about the film.
