Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Dan G — 26 Mar 2009
This was majorly disappointing. I love George Romero's work; his zombie movies in particular, but this one just really didn't do much of anything for me. I see where he's coming from; that he's back at his old games of combining zombies with social and/or political commentary.
And I suppose the whole constant-blogger culture and zombies combination hasn't really been done yet, but... I don't know; the movie was sort of clever but not much fun. Most of the characters were dull and hard to care about, the story dragged and this one time, Romero threw subtlety to the winds (he's not subtle, but his social commentary has been known to be) and beats the audience over the head with the whole 'isn't all this constant blogging crazy' idea.
You know there's something wrong with the movie when you're sitting there bored hoping upon hope that some cast member, any one (it doesn't matter) will die a sudden and horrible death whether or not how/why it happens makes sense in the context.
While gore is always fun, it's pretty empty if there's no good reason for it, and even more so when you're hoping for copious pointless amounts of it to liven things up.
