Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Patrick S — 10 Aug 2009
Personally, I think Romero failed in trying to reboot his own franchise. Regardless of what some might say...this wasn't trying to capitalize on Cloverfield, it was pretty much completed by the time Cloverfield was filming, and it wasn't as kinetic or shaky as that flick.
The problem is...Romero had a good thing going in Land of the Dead, and he said the story would continue with "World" of the Dead, but instead he goes back to the shoestring budget, and the result is passable, but his first four films wern't worth rebooting, they were just fine.
..and then starting the zombie apocalypse again, especially in this day where you've got the fast zombies or diseased cannibals like 28 Days/Weeks Later or the Dawn of the Dead remake; not to mention the realistic take on said zombie apocalypse that those flicks had, or crazy action like the Resident Evil trilogy.
..this just didn't do anything new, unlike Land of the Dead, where Romero was on to something really good. This was...dissapointing, but decent.
