Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Teri S — 26 May 2010
Romero's weakest Zombie Movie? not in my humble opinion, subtly commenting on how every facet of our day to day life is recorded so that we can piece together a "diary" of our movements and actions.
I would have rated this higher had I been able to care about any of the main characters, but sadly they are overshadowed by people we only see mere glimpses of. In fact Samuel , the deaf mute Amish guy probably earned the film one of it's stars.
The story itself is very nicely done, following the initial outbreak and peoples reactions to the news reports and society slowly falling apart around them. It's also nice to see the return of the shufflers with several comments during the movie about why the dead can't run.
Zombies don't need to run to be threatening, their mindset is what's the truly terrifying aspect.... The Hunger.... the unstoppable urge to feast on human flesh, with nothing getting in their way, they care about nothing but the urge to eat.
no remorse, no feelings no stopping until the essential head shot. With the film being based around the initial outbreak there are no hordes of Zombies in the film but not knowing where one will lurch groaning around the corner from adds to the films tension.
Watch it and see if you learn anything from the educational video being shot while we voyeuristically watch the survivors.
