Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Nelson P — 25 Aug 2010
The first few minutes of this movie aside, it wasn't until halfway through the movie before I even stopped to take a breather and realize I was in fact watching a movie. 28 Days and The Crazies have turned zombie style movies into still viable releases, and I'd put this right in that group. Definitely one of Romero's best.
A group of students out filming a horror film get word over the radio of the first occurence of the dead reanimating and proceeding to kill others. After that, the next 24 hours turns into a fight for survival as the pandemic spreads from city to city, the undead continue to encroach and encounters with other renegade survivors out to steal much needed supplies turns deadly. Mostly(entirely?) shot using hand-held video cameras, it's an interesting in a very overcrowded genre.
