Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Malia P — 12 Dec 2010
Not quite what I was expecting. I think the documentary story telling was an interesting addition to romero's series. unfortunately, I think the timing of this film works against it. this sort of storytelling and camera work has been used before in the blair witch project, and most recently in cloverfield. it seems many people often complain of this sort of shaky camera work.
I liked the idea that with professional media dying, it seems all the average joes on the net are your only source of information. and the trouble of extracting the truth from all the POVs.
I did not enjoy all the trite characterizations given to our band of zombie fighters. "don't mess with texas" girl. the refined british film professor. the little emo/scene kid in glasses. and of course, our filmmaker student who we saw little of because the camera was glued to his face. the cast was quite obnoxious at times, and I enjoyed the sequences where they met up with other minor characters (the amish man, and the newly revived black panthers).
Overall a decent romero film, but it seems to missing that little spark what was in his previous films.
But man! the zombie goldfish was classic. I wished we saw more of that before they found their way out.
