Review of Diary of the Dead (2007) by Danny D — 08 Feb 2011
This is the low-point folks, it can only go up from here. While the idea was great, Romero apparently didn't trust his audience to see the same societal commentary as him and took a sledgehammer to drive it home.
Dawn of the Dead had zombie shopping delicately showing how we ourselves are corporate zombies. Here, the idea we would rather video every moment of the day than help because looking through a little screen distances us is a solid comment.
Having narration by the characters over the entire movie which spells out this point repeatedly is just annoying and insulting to our intelligence. The only high points are zoimbies walking in a swimming pool, which was only about 10 seconds long, and the ending, which was actually quite interesting and the only part of the "we shield ourselves by viewing through screens rather than helping' idea trhat isn't said outloud by the narrator.
