Review of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (2017) by James T. A — 25 Jul 2017
The first three films where not great by any means, but they still had a real sense of earnestness and some charm to them. This movie lacks that an opts for easy toilet humor. The performances are really bad, Rodrick is the worst by far.
It's unbelievable how inexperienced he seems. He has no chemistry with any cast member and delievers all his lines in a stillted way. The soundtrack is fulled of pop tracks, at least the previous movies had some good songs from musicians like The Ramones and Rick James.
I think with this film I chuckled once at a surprising boob joke which I wasn't expecting in a PG film but apart from that I was dead silent the whole time. The little book style animations are actually improved upon and are still really charming.
One thing I loved with the other movies was the score it was some of Vince Guardali esque score with some catchy tracks The film includes none of that, not even the theme! I'm pretty nostalgic for the original films despite their flaws but this film is just terrible, I hope if they ever try to adapt Wimpy Kid again (which I highly doubt will happen after this) they can try a bit harder make a funnier comedy and a more faithfull adaptation.
Please don't bother with this movies It's been such a great year for films and there's so much more quality films to watch right now.
