Review of Diamonds Are Forever (1971) by Matt C — 12 Jan 2009
It'd be better if the plot and the tone wasn't so random but as it is, it's an enjoyable if campy entry into the Bond series. The diamond plot was a bit interesting and the first half of the movie is easily the best, in my opinion, but when Charles Gray rears his head again and the plot turns into something involving lasers and space it kind of falls off the rails and is absolutely confusing. There's some fun scenes in here (among some really ridiculous ones - the chase scene in the desert is completely random and out of place) and I was never bored while watching this, so I would recommend this.
However, the two main henchmen are annoying as hell, the plot is needlessly complex and Charles Gray isn't menacing at all as Blofeld. I should also mention that some people complain about Connery's weight in this movie, but I assure you it's not that noticeable or distracting. Besides, anybody focusing so intently on Connery's body when Jill St. John and Lana Wood are prancing around in bikinis obviously has their priorities mixed up.
