Review of Dhoom 2 (2006) by Donovan D — 15 Feb 2008
Ridiculous sequel to the suprisingly popular (and lacklustre) Dhoom. Abhishek and Uday Chopra return as the Lethal Weaponesque team of Jai and Ali (respectively), but the filmmakers decided that rather than continue with their story, they would make a heist film where these two characters would be little more than guests in their own film.
The film's main focus is on Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai's characters... actually, I should make a correction: this film's main focus is on how sexy Hrithik and Aishwarya are, plus throw in the voluptuous Bipasha Basu in for no apparent reason other than eye candy.
The filmmakers are not without merit on this point - this is an exceedingly attractive cast - but that's not enough to make a good action movie. So then we come to the story, which is easily the most ridiculous and sensationalist plot one can even think of - one has to truly suspend their disbelief to even partially accept that their is any credibility to the proceedings.
It makes any of the Mission:Impossible films seem possible. This is third hand simulacra - John Woo via Hollywood via Bollywood - and while fun, it is so unbelievable its simply ludicrous.
