Review of Devil's Knot (2013) by Sylvia H — 17 Sep 2013
First, let me begin by saying that this is NOT merely a West Memphis Three movie. While the story of the WM3 has been chronicled by praise worthy documentaries and their story of incarceration is appalling, have we forgotten that this is ALSO the story of the unsolved murder of 3 very young boys?! This is their story too.
And, while Egoyan addresses the gross miscarriage of justice, the mob mentality and the absolute ineptitude of the West Memphis police department, he also reminds us that these families are nowhere near the end of this horrific nightmare.
For the Hollywood critics to ask "Why tell this story again?" is irresponsible and to those who think this is anywhere near over because the WM3 have been released is hideous. Your dismissal of this important movie will only prove to thwart the efforts of the filmmakers to remind those who know and to educate those who don't that these murders remain unsolved and that the WM3 have yet to be exonerated.
Yes, 18 years in prison for a crime that you did not commit is an unimaginable tragedy, but 3 lives ending after 8 years of life is unspeakable and to live as a parent of a murdered child would be nothing short of hell.
Bravo to Egoyan for making a movie that will hopefully reach far more people than the documentary viewing public and elitist critics.
