Review of Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999) by Augusto C — 25 Jul 2009
Most people think the concept of neurotically washing your hands to cope with feeling of guilt came from Sigmund Freud. It didn't. It came from William Shakespeare, (Macbeth). A good writer can introduce us to a new buzz-word. An incredible writer has that ability to introduce us to new archetypes and symbols of the human psyche.
Deuce Bigalow Male Gigolo is the result of not only one such genius, but the result of a once-in-history writer, producer, director, and most of all - star actor. The only real metaphor to describe the combined brilliance is when they combined all three proton beams in Ghost Busters to form a singular powerful beam that no power could resist.
The scene where Deuce performs an erotic dance for Detective Fowlers wife was like a theatrical knife flung from the screen and straight into the viewers heart, like it or not this one is with you forever. It's that kind of disturbing imagery, things you didn't want to see because you didn't want to believe - that is what art was intended to confront the viewer with. This movie confronts you until your want to scream and run! Stop it, stop it from playing and never hear of it again. But you are changed for it. You have now seen Rob Schneider in a thong and that will always be a part of you.
