Review of Detropia (2012) by Derek M — 17 Jan 2013
What happened to the home of the automobile? To Motown? To the pride we used to take in being a middle-class, blue-collar, hard-working Detroiter? In 1930, Detroit was the fastest growing city in the world, (yes world), and 80 years later, Detroit is the fastest declining city in the United States.
This film, through interviews with residents of the city and political figures from the city, the film highlights the rapid decline of a once great city and how it is just the tip of the iceberg for the rest of the country.
The film is a portrait of run down buildings, destroyed properties, homeless and workless human beings all suffering and reeling from the loss of their city. Being from a suburb outside of Detroit, I can feel the trickle-down effect and IT IS REAL.
This is a documentary worth seeing and taking the time to allow its reality to sink in. No matter where you live, we're all in this together. Reviewed 1/16/13. Rated 4 out of 5.
