Review of Detroit Rock City (1999) by Anthony M — 14 Nov 2009
A fun teen comedy that isn't necssarily just for KISS fans, though the KISS Army is certain to love it. It's no masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but if you're watching this expecting some revalation...you're wasting your time.
Reasons to see this movie:
It's a light hearted comedy about growing up in the 70s, so if you're interested in the time or grew up during the 70s, it's a sure treat. The soundtrack is just awesome. If you love 70s rock, you'll be jamming the whole movie. Not only is there an obvious abundance of KISS, but also great acts like Thin Lizzy, Van Halen, Cheap Trick, Sweet, Blue Oyster Cult, and many others. Great tunes. The characters are a lot of fun, though definately eccentric. On a more specific note, this movie has one of the coolest opening credits sequences that I have ever seen. It's an above average comedy as far as laughs go, there's plenty of funny moments.
Reasons not to see this movie:
It's no critic's movie. It's predictable and implausable at every turn, so if that bothers you, stay away. This movie takes some shots at organized religion, more specifically Catholics, so if you are easily offended stay away. There's also some corny lines here and there that make you wince, which is one of the reasons I didn't give it a higher rating.
