Review of Detroit (2017) by Brad S — 08 Aug 2017
First Impressions: Detroit is extremely ambitious in trying to tell a rather complex story, but unfortunately, the approach Mark Boal the writer and Kathryn Bigelow the Director took, didn't engage me as a viewer.
At least on my first viewing. Maybe a second viewing where the large ensemble cast isn't all introduced to me, I'll pick up on some more engaging details. There's some strong filmmaking craft at work here, along with a few good performances, but mostly I was bored and horrified, and desperately wanting to care more about the characters.
Adam and Josh really nailed my thoughts and feelings about the film in their Filmspotting #644 podcast review of the movie.
