Review of Detroit (2017) by Derk F — 11 Aug 2017
"Detroit" is a mixed bag for me. On one hand, there are really good performances and there are scenes that are both intense and heartbreaking. You cannot help but to think of today where police brutality remains and black people do not receive justice.
However, I do think director Kathryn Bigelow could have benefited from having more (if any) African Americans involved in the process. I believe she fails to delve into the system which allows these dirty cops to exist, thrive and survive nor does she fully explores how corruption looms over communities of color like a dark cloud.
Also, I felt that Dismukes played by John Boyega was too passive to be believed. I do feel that "Detroit" should be seen but with the warning that this is extremely violent almost to the point of being exploitative.
You have been warned.
