Review of Detroit (2017) by Enaid N — 29 Jul 2017
The movie "Detroit" doesn't accurately reflect the 1967 accounts. It begins with raiding the Blind Pig (an illegal operation) and arresting patrons. It then shows rioters throwing bottles through police car windows. What it fails to show is why. As patrons were arrested, they were brutally beaten, and women were sexually accosted by police.
Innocent teens were also brutalized by police, with 3 murdered at the Algiers hotel. What it didn't show was the sodomization of these teens by police. Two were only at the Algiers hotel to avoid the curfew violation (couldn't get home in time). Sadly, the police walked away scot-free because the "sodomization" wasn't allowed as testimony during the trial.
It shows the Dramatics' first break at the Fox Theatre Motown Revue, and also shows them singing "Whatcha See is Whatcha Get" during this period. The Dramatics began releasing music in 1963 with "Toy Soldier", and 4 songs between 1963 and 1967. The song "Whatcha See is Whatcha Get" wasn't released until 1971.
