Review of Detroit (2017) by Jaime L — 05 Aug 2017
The more I thought about this film after watching the less I found I liked it. Detroit is incredibly manipulative and also glosses over what was a tragic event in America's history but Kathryn Bigelow spends more time on an Eli Roth lite version of torture porn.
I found the behavior of the officers involved in the main sequence at the Algiers motel to be over the top, almost cartoon mustache twirling villainy instead of finding them to be realistic. The film is obvious propaganda which hurt the experience for me.
The film is marvelously shot though and the acting is terrific, I just wish there wasn't such an obvious agenda being pushed here and to act like there is even remotely any parallels to be made in 2017.
