Review of Detroit (2017) by Jack C — 06 Aug 2017
Oh my god. This was only 50 years ago, folks. Here in OR, racist laws that targeted PoC were not only in the books, but actively enforced by police who either fail to question the laws they enforce, or worse, believe that PoC should be more targeted by law enforcement through red-lining and so-called gang enforcement that really translates to neighborhood oppression, until this very century, hardly a decade ago. This movie was so real, so visceral... I have to admit, it leaves me questioning the moral authority of lawmakers and the police that enforce those laws, despite how many of them are close and trusted friends. I think, for just a moment, I got to feel how it feels for PoC regarding police, the fears grounded in past horrors and present threats... and now, more than ever, I feel we are not just failing these Americans, but STILL doing them harm, ACTIVELY and DELIBERATELY.
I would think ANY one of us, even better, a small and diverse group, would benefit from a viewing followed by discussion and even action planning for next steps.
