Review of Detour (1992) by John H — 24 Dec 2011
Good little noir as Tom Neal hitchhikes from New York to California to meet up w/ his gal only to have the guy who picks him up die. In fear of prosecution he dumps the body & steals his car & his identity.
As luck would have it he picks up Ann Savage who's a crazy bitch & she identifies him as not being the man he says he is. She has him by the short & curlies taking him on a road of blackmail & deception that ultimately leads to her death too.
That's two murders that Neal is up shits creek for destroying his life. Im not one for actual narratives in my films (other then A Clockwork Orange) but Detour has a pretty good tone to it & this is a story that is told to the audience in one man's mind.
Pretty solid except the ending seems a little tacked on & things go out w/ a whimper when it should have gone out w/ a roar.
