Review of Detour (1992) by Anne F — 28 Sep 2011
Made on a budget of virtually nothing Edgar G Ulmer weaves gold dust bin this gritty B film noir.
When pianist Al Roberts decides to hitchhike his way across America to meet his sweetheart in LA ,his life begins to unravel at a furious rate when the guy who picks him up dies in mysterious circumstances and then as he asumes his identity his life takes a turn again as he is blackmailed by Vera a woman in the classic femme fatale role who decides to make some fast money out of Al predicament.
The fact the movie has zero budget makes it work better ,Ulmer allows the camera to go out of focus to show a mans fate and his use of location is pretty peerless.
As a Footnote Tom Neal the actor playing Al here really ended up killing someone in real life ,as case of art imitating life if ever there was one .
As for the film its a true B movie calssic.
