Review of Detachment (2011) by Camille K — 07 Feb 2012
If you think your life sucks, watch this movie and you'll change your mind, because there is no way you're as unlucky as Henry Barthes... The movie is well done, actors are good, very good even, including the students.
But. It's a good thing to make a heavy and tough movie, but this is really too much therefore I'm having a hard time believing in it. It touched me, one story in particular (great newcomer Betty Kaye), but just like I don't believe in all-happy movies, I don't believe in all-crappy movies.
Come on, the guy's mom killed herself, his grandfather is sick, he works in a school where children and teachers are fucked up, meets a teenage hooker, might as well be blind with a wooden leg! Thank God he looks like Adrian Brody, perfect in that role.
Otherwise, it's a movie that is worth seeing, but is not the marvelous thing I expected. A special word for James Caan, he's really excellent and I enjoyed seeing him again in a role like this ("Can I see your tits?" - "No!" - "Well you're wrong, I actually can" - Best line in the movie !).
