Review of Detachment (2011) by Alex P — 01 Apr 2012
I've never felt sadder, than I do right now, after watching this movie. It continued to beat you up scene after scene and Adrian Brody is to blame. He delivers a fantastic portrayal of a substitute teacher at an inner city high school.
Now of course, he brings his own baggage into the school, some of it even on the more unbelievable side (that being Sami Gayle's character, she's fantastic in the role, its the role that she plays thats unbelievable) but you get the idea right from the beginning that your not going to smile once throughout the whole film, but its so good, you're okay with it.
It's too over the top at times, but the performances and the commentary in-between scenes by Brody piece this drama together and keep it pacing and interesting. It shouldn't be considered a commentary on our school system, if that were the case no one would sign up to be a teacher, but the undertones are there and they are real problems that are still not being addressed.
It's a good drama, just don't expect to feel happy after. A good film isn't scared to not give you a happy ending.
