Review of Detachment (2011) by Kevin C — 16 Mar 2013
Energy is not something this film lacks, but its execution is all over the place. This film kind of like the students in Barthes class (and many around the world) just can't keep focus long enough on one thing, instead the film jumps all over the place.
It's didactic in a way that's not pleasing, and chopped up in a way that makes it all a little hard to follow, with all the intersecting stories that sometimes distract from the other. Tony Kaye directs using the "everything but the kitchen sink" method and it's really too much at times.
Brody is great, and the kids in the film are all really able, especially the one who plays Erica. Recommended, but be wary of high expectations.
