Review of Despicable Me (2010) by Damjan R — 07 Aug 2013
Sporting a smart story and great visual humor (tough to say physical, because it's well, animated) Despicable Me is very enjoyable and is just solid top to bottom. Solid but not spectacular. The storytelling takes some liberties with character motivation and short cuts it at some turns giving the viewer a streamlined story without the juice and maybe imperfection that would have been better for the character's development.
The voice acting is good but it doesn't stand out in any way, Steve Carell does a good job, but I wouldn't put him at the top of animated voice actors by any stretch. the animation is good but you get the feeling it's an indie animated film and it shows up some times but it's nothing that distracts from the story.
The direction surprised me because it showed great visual awareness and the humor was well paced and executed. As a light night at the movies, you could do a lot worse than Despicable Me.
