Review of Descendants 2 (2017) by Jon C — 25 Sep 2017
The VKs or Villain Kids are back with director Kenny Ortega at the helm once more as the worldwide phenomenon continues in the next chapter of Descendants.
It's been 6 months since Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos left the Isle of the Lost and decided to be good instead of bad like their parents.
Malificent is no longer a threat, Mal and King Ben are an item yet it's becoming a struggle on her living up to the glamorous image, Evie has become one of the brightest students and is turning into quite the fashion designer, Carlos and his new dog pal Dood are getting along although he's having trouble asking out Jane, and Jay has been taking a more active role in the athletic department.
There's also a royal cotillion coming up.
Mal unfortunately can't take the pressure anymore feeling she's nothing without her magic and can't be who she really is so she leaves and heads back to the Isle of the Lost.
As if things couldn't get more complicated the Isle is now under the rule of newcomer Uma, daughter of Ursula who feels betrayed that Mal and the others got the opportunity to leave and be happy.
She then hatches a plan with her associates, Gil, son of Gaston and Harry, son of Hook to break free from the barrier and rule all of Auradon.
Of course Mal's friends aren't going to let her go that easily so they follow her to get her to come back while also confronting Uma.
We also get to meet another VK, Dizzy, daughter of Drizella who has huge dreams of making her clothing and accessories mainstream even though she's stuck on the Isle.
This movie is all about being your authentic self; it's the best you can be even if you're not like everyone else.
It may seem like you don't belong but being comfortable in your own skin is the better quality to have instead of having others', there's no need to fake it all.
I love the messages, the brighter, flashy colors, the new songs, the deeper emotions, and the unbreakable bond all 4 of the kids share together.
They will always be those kids from the Isle no matter what but still have a chance to live as happily and freely as they choose.
Auradon is a new world, a sort of land of opportunity if you will to start over to have a second chance.
I also really love how much more focus the friendship between Mal and Evie is handled; both of them were different before leaving the island and it is more so now they've gone back.
The ending is also a great throwback to the first film.
We may be getting more of the story in the near future in this world.
Kenny Ortega has made another worthy musical sequel conveying a universal theme that not just kids can relate to but everyone.
I'm still a fan and I cannot wait to see more from the Disney villain children :).
