Review of Derrida (2002) by Elona M — 18 Sep 2007
I anticipated this documentary quite highly.
Especially as Astra Taylor's Zizek! managed to be both entertaining and informative on her subject's ideas.
Granted that Derrida was not a cooperative subject, infact he seemed dead set on being difficult. Perhaps he was attempting to be consistent on camera with his own written assertions. Early on we hear Derrida quoting Heidegger on the life of Aristotle: "a philosopher is born, thinks and dies", in that there is no place for biographical details when examining a philosopher. So haven't these documentarian's shot themselves in the foot? The documentary never really gets over this hurdle.
A few lazy voice-over passages from his books and a series of quite obstinate interviews is pretty much the sum of what is offered here. Leaving a feeling that this was a wasted opportunity to get more from a mind that doesn't come around that often.
