Review of Denial (2016) by Tim M — 16 Oct 2016
Saw Denial this weekend. Denial is the true story of a lawsuit that took place in 1998 when a Holocaust denier, sued an American author for libel in the British courts for calling him a liar in her book.
The trial that resulted literally put the existence of the Holocaust on trial. The court room drama that results is riveting. Timothy Spall gives another amazing performance, playing a man that is both smart and evil.
If the movie were a work of fiction, it would be hard to believe that somebody this smart could be so evil. But this is indeed a absolutely true story. And Timothy Spall nails it. The one misstep the movie takes is in casting the usually great Rachel Weisz in the lead.
Her fake New York accent is so bad it is hard to listen to her. And she plays this supposedly learned author as somebody in a constant state of bewilderment. But with that said. If you love court room dramas or history or both this is a great film.
Julie and I were riveted to the end. Even though we knew the outcome. And the scenes actually filmed at Auschwitz are incredibly moving. If you are looking for an alternative to see this weekend. This might just be the film.
