Review of Den of Thieves (2018) by Don F — 26 Jan 2018
Empty. That's exactly how I felt after watching this movie. Empty. Gerard Butler seems to only have a career in action/thriller movies because Mel Gibson was ostracized by Hollywood. Unfortunately, Butler's ability to act doesn't come close to Gibson.
But how many more times have we seen a Nick O'Brien in a cops and robbers movie? There was zero character development for this lead character. Nothing to help us understand why he was the way he was both professionally and personally.
Pablo Schreiber was a bit more effective in his role, though his role, too, was much-cliched. The conflict between the "good arm" of law enforcement against the "bad group" of law enforcement was predictable.
Even the "ironic" ending wasn't as shocking as the film wanted it to be. It was just an "oh, I see" moment vs. a "holy wow, I didn't see that at all". I almost walked out 30 minutes into the film.
When I did walk out when it ended, I wanted my money back.
