Review of Demolition (2016) by Clark C — 05 Apr 2016
This movie is a throwback that we all desire to see, even if we don't know it. You could watch this movie 30 years ago or 30 years from now and still enjoy the art of the script, acting and directing.
There are no loud exotic slow-mo cut scenes or special cgi. Just artists delivering a wonderful script through their delicate interpretations. Vallee uses music through out the film to set moods and invoke emotions.
Although there is not a score, the music is still very important to the ambience when used. Vallee's simple camera style with natural lighting is perfect for the character driven story line. A story line delivered wonderfully by Gyllenhaal.
His simple kind of boyhood innocence plays perfectly in his role a Davis. The characters relationship past and present with his wife and her parents (Chris Cooper father-in-law) is so delicate and deep and brought out of the page brilliantly by Jake.
The way he juggles his new unfortunate life experiences with Naomi Watt's Karen creates deep sense of empathy for him and her. It is here that we are introduced to Judah Lewis. It took a special young man to tackle the character of Chris.
I wont give away plot here, just will say that because of Judah Lewis your emotional roller coaster will soar. It took a special young teen to pull this off and Jean Marc Vallee and Judah Lewis succeeded.
This is a wonderful character driven movie that all should see. Let the explosions take place inside you instead of on the screen and go enjoy Demolition with a friend.
