Review of Deliver Us from Evil (2014) by Brett H — 08 Jul 2014
Overlong and cliched to the max, Scott Derrickson strikes out and fails to deliver anything fresh or even scary! The film feels like three different films jumbled together and can't stay focused on one element for very long, adding a subplot with the main character's family that goes NOWHERE! Eric Bana does a fine job, but the real reason to watch this at all is for Joel McHale who is always a delight and brings much needed entertainment to the dull proceedings.
I am shocked at how bored I was during this "scary movie" and when you have "lions & tigers & bears, oh my!" for your cheap jump scares, I lose interest fast. There are a few well-done moments near the beginning, and Derrickson is a master at burning creepy images into your brain, but the script isn't strong enough to hold interest and the ending was weak.
