I think Stigmata did this whole angle better. I'm not quite sure if Eric was atheist or more like non-Christian or Agnostic in this film. I guess he kind of seemed Atheist. Either way, it's a kind of convoluted plotline that is pretty much boring all the way till the ending. Nothing makes too much sense.

Some Atheist cop with anger issues is trying to solve crimes but can't solve the last few because he doesn't believe in spirituality and that demons can possess the souls of the living, a pastor comes around and helps his belief system and now they are working together to find out and solve the evil going on.
