Review of Deliver Us from Evil (1973) by Geonard Y — 22 Jul 2007
Directed by Amy Berg.
Starring Oliver O?Grady, Bob Jyono, Ann Jyono, Nancy Sloan, Marie Jyono, Bill Hodgman.
The calm disposition of Father Oliver O?Grady while being interviewed is for the most part, the shocking thing in this documentary about the sexual abuse of Catholic priests. O?Grady since the early 70s had sexually abused numerous children in his early career and gotten away with it. Berg?s two-pronged attack makes a case for O?Grady and targets the Church clergy which conspired to keep the priest scot-free, a conspiracy that goes right up to the Pope and the Vatican. The movie is numbing, thought-provoking while not being right-on judgmental, Berg lets loose his participants and the story takes a form all its own, even when two sides never meet. Her direction is like a fist punching through glass shattering beliefs but in the end meets a wall. It is understandable amid human frailty that even God?s chosen representatives would sin but for the Vatican to wash its hands?this is a very powerful film and Christ would be so ashamed of his Church.
Best Scene: Bob Jyono breaks down.
Quote: ?The Church had betrayed me and my family!?
