Review of Delicatessen (1991) by Jeremy B — 26 May 2008
I believe this was the first movie I ever saw that required me to travel into the city to see it at a specialty art-house cinema instead of just waiting for it to come to the suburban multiplex or trickle down to the video store.
And it's still one of my favorites. It manages to evoke a convincing and unique post-apocalyptic society while remaining mostly located within a single building. And it generates (and satisfyingly resolves) a number of different narrative strands which range from the heartwarming to the disturbing to the hilarious (and are often all at once).
An absolutely perfect film.
