Review of Delicatessen (1991) by Matthew B — 19 Apr 2009
A scrumptious cinematic delight. Despite the Sweeney Todd-inspired horror of the plotline, directors Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet approach a hazy, pollution- and starvation-riddled post-apocalyptic world with the wide-eyed, fantastical joie de vivre of children.
Dominique Pinon, Marie-Laure Dougnac, Karin Viard, Howard Vernon (delightfully bizarre among his boscage of snails, gushing water, and frogs), Edith Ker, and Silvie Laguna (uproariously comical as the ever-unsuccessfully-suicidal Mme.
Interligator) form a dazzling mosaic of bizarre caricatures, though Jean-Claude Dreyfus's insensate, grotesquely simpering Clapet steals the show.
