Review of Delicatessen (1991) by Ben W — 10 Dec 2009
This macabre story tells a tale of desperation and love while illuminating some of humanity's darkest shadows. Despite an uncharacteristically bland color scheme, Jeunet's typical precociousness livens up this dreary tenement building, and while sometimes particularly morbid or ghastly images grace the screen they are offset with a queer examination of themes ranging from cannibalism to suicide.
This is perhaps a blacker form of film we're most familiar with when Tim Burton handles it, and Jeunet succeeds mightily with Delicatessen.
