Even a cannibalistic dystopia isn't immune to Jeunet's trademark colorful and inventive French whimsy. The early signs of his Directorial idioms are all here: a preoccupation with quirky individual affectations, richly primary colored art direction, nods to archaic entertainment and art, but like any early work, it's a little rough in spots.
