Review of Delicatessen (1991) by Simp P — 12 Jan 2013
Wondrous. Delicatessen takes place in a surreal universe where meat is the currency because it has become so rare. There is a butcher that runs an apartment complex where he sells meat to his tenants, but the meat's gotta come from somewhere.
.. Do you know all those great things found in Amelie that are just warm and life affirming? Well, they're here as well, just with a darker hue to it. It's by the same director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, but he's teamed up with Marc Caro, who has a penchant for the darker, hence the more sinister scenario.
I sometimes got lost in just how well it is shot; it's so beautifully done and every frame has a purpose. The thing I most want when I watch a movie is to be shown something I have never seen before, and Delicatessen does not only that at every turn, but also uses common, everyday items in ways you don't get to see them get used.
I loved all the quirky characters, especially Dominique Pinon as the lead; he's incredibly affable. This is an absolutely original film that, I can promise you, is unlike anything you've ever seen before.
