Review of Delicatessen (1991) by Ian R — 03 Aug 2013
A bizarre dark comedy from French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet who would go on to direct Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain. The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic France where commodities are scarce and transactions are payed in lentils.
A butcher (Jean-Claude Dreyfus) puts out an ad for a building superintendent, however this no ordinary job as the butcher sells cuts of human meat to his tenants. An out of work circus clown Louison (Dominique Pinion) applies for the job of superintendent and begins to develop a romance with Julie the daughter of the butcher, who tries to help Louison from becoming the next meal.
The dark surrealist imagery reminiscent of the works of Terry Gilliam helps to create an enjoyable film that is a must watch for fans of dark comedies and Art House films.
