Review of Déjà Vu (2006) by Benjamin S — 28 Jun 2010
Sometimes, commercials can present a movie one way when it's really another. I believe this is the case with this movie. I think it tripped up a lot of people who went to see it and got caught in a different movie entirely. It didn't bother me. My folks rented it and I enjoyed it. Some things might be a little off, but it's not terrible. Acting and characters are good, premise is interesting, and it is a new twist on the detective drama. I won't over look its flaws though.
1. The physics are a little... um... well... it doesn't seem possible. Then again, it's a movie, right? Anything can happen in a movie.
2. The plot might be trying to do too much, for the average movie. It's a love story ( sigh, of course. Every movie now made has a love story thrown in, why? ), detective, who done it, science fiction, thriller.
3. Why would they let the police use this type of machine? I mean I see the application, but why trust something of this much scientific magnitude to the cops? Shouldn't it be in the hands of physicists, scientists, Stephen Hawking, SOMEONE!!!???
4.The under-emphasis on the explosion. This detective is more interested in the life of one women over 500 more people who died in a terrorist explosion. I can understand the usefulness of her in finding the terrorist, I can even understand the tacked on love story, which is why this movie looses some points, but the overemphasis of it makes Doug one of the most unprofessional cops I have seen in a movie. His emotions got in the way of his objectivity in solving the case, which ads to character, but kind of bothers me. I guess it's a personal thing.
5. there is one part that over-emphasizes the time differences. It's just one statement that is corny and over stated that should have been cut. We got it when you explained it the first time. Don't underestimate your audience.
I think it deserves a C to a B, but it all depends on what you think really. It's not rotten, but it does have some plot holes to it that keeps it from being a really good movie. It's rentable, and if you like it you can buy it, just don't spend 20 bucks for the blue-ray. Get it at Wall Mart or something for a discount.
It's decent at the least. Becides, Denzel's in it. It can't be that bad, can it?
