Review of Definitely, Maybe (2008) by Prashanth R — 22 Dec 2010
Sentimental, Schmultzy & Predictable. Definitely, Maybe is Possibly, Probably all of these things though I couldnt prevent myself from warming to this film. I think the reason for this is that it is a story that many of us can identify with. High hopes dashed, questionable behaviour and dubious excuses from all concerned and fault on all sides. Old flames, the seeming importance of timing in our romantic relationships and the "What if?" thoughts that we ask ourselves from time to time. Im sure we all do it, it cant just be me can it? :D.
The script is good and it keeps you interested throughout although the films final destination is never in doubt. As with most films of this type I did find myself bemoaning how if everyone was just honest there would be a lot less pain all round but this wasnt an overriding emotion.
Breslin is as likeable as she was in Little Miss Sunshine and the female cast is a strong one (esp Weisz) and nobody lets the side down. Its also good to see Kline again but it is Reynolds who gives arguably the best performance that ive seen from him. Yes, he still has his trademark sarcastic witt about him at all times but unlike other performances (esp. Blade & Wolverine) this isnt all that he is about this time. Snuggle up on the sofa and enjoy.
