Review of Defendor (2009) by Renato F — 16 Apr 2010
Before Kick-Ass, the superhero genre was completely deconstructed with Defendor.
This is a film that manges to completely subvert the genre. Whereas Kick-Ass followed the dimensions of Adaptation, in ultimately relenting to the genre it was trying to subvert, this film goes all the way. However the way in which it does this leads to results that aren't exactly memorable.
The film struggles for a consistent tone within the film. It is in some ways too grounded in reality and nearly becomes a drama about mental illness. Defendor ultimately heads towards an ending that has aspirations of TV Movie of the Week. The shots of the public showing respect was trite, as was the final shot of the female lead with a typewriter. Then there is the constant affliction of Sandra Oh.
Canadian cinema has managed to produce some quite interesting films in the last few years with Pontypool being released last year. It was also neat to end proceedings with Metric.
