Review of Defendor (2009) by Charles H — 27 Jul 2010
DEFENDOR! Wait, no. The spelling is wrong. Ain't it supposed to be spelled DEFENDER? Hell no. DEFENDOR will be pissed off and tells you off.
Woody Harrelson is Arthur Poppington by day and Defendor by night. Actually, this isn't your typical superhero movie. Arthur is not mentally sound, but he makes up for it by being a kind soul, who just wants to fight crime. His main goal is to take down his arch-nemesis, Captain Industry. While fighting crime one night, he saved Kat, a prostitute (Kat Dennings) from a corrupt police officer, Dooney (Elias Koteas) who is going to be a constant thorn on the side for Defendor. Things will start to move from there.
There will be times when you think this movie is going nowhere. Will there be an ending? An appropriate ending? Will I be comfortable watching him getting beat up most of the time? I wish he had some superpowers to fend off those thugs. But damn, Arthur has more 'marbles' (it's one of his funny arsenal of weapons) than most mentally sound guys out there (including me?). This movie DOES go somewhere. And Woody Harrelson just delivered another noteworthy performance in a heroic manner.
