Review of Defendor (2009) by Ken B — 08 Jan 2011
Funny enough to be more entertaining than the Spider Man's but still very cliche.
The hero or menace dichotomy as a response to vigilantes is a cliche even South Park has mocked. Also, the hooker with a heart of gold and the mentally slow man who warms everyones' hearts.
A real crack whore would be thinner, uglier, wrinkly, and her teeth would be coming out. She wouldn't hangout with a sap who gave her his credit-card she'd just spend it all on an overdose or burn through it then return to tricking. If he only paid a stipend she'd whore to supplement her supply.
For as much as this movie goes for a balance closer to real life, Kickass outdid it w/its' scene.
SPOILER.
Where the main character gets stabbed.
END SPOILER.
Although Defendor gets beat up his injuries are always closer to harmless.
Kat Dennings does well throughout except when she's supposed to cry.
SPOILERS.
The ending was too everything-works-out for me. I thought it'd be more entertaining if it went w/a sci-fi twist and bullets really did bounce off Defendor. To my sensibilities, it's more BS to pretend a story's set in the real world and have unrealistic conclusions than it is to've fantastic premises.
