Review of Defending Your Life (1991) by Kelly F — 19 May 2010
A really entertaining comedy with a great premise and some excellent performances. The premise is that, when you die, instead of going straight to heaven, you have to go to Judgment City, an in-between place where you have to defend your past life in a courtroom-like setting as having been good.
It's a creative and interesting conceit. The world of Judgment City maybe could have been a little more fleshed out, but supposedly the people who run it make it seem just like modern day American for the convenience of the people passing through.
Albert Brooks is likable as the lead character who has to make his nebbish, ordinary life seem worthy. Meryl Streep is great as a lovely woman he meets while in Judgment City; she is as charming and delightful here as I have ever seen her.
Rip Torn has a very funny supporting role as Brooks's defense attorney. The movie is very light and fun, and a little bit touching by the end.
