Review of DeepStar Six (1989) by Scott A — 23 Aug 2013
Okay, this came out the same year as Leviathan and that was just a far better film.
This one is pretty similar in overall plot, with a team of underwater workers being terrorized by an underwater creature. The difference here, is they basically free this thing from an underground cave, and for most of the film, it isn't even shown.
That was the biggest issue. The creature is really only responsible for two of the what, nine death scenes, face to face. I guess it has a part to play in the all the deaths by it's actions, but most of the death scenes are off screen or non creature related. It feels cheap in that way like the film had no budget for blood.
The acting was decent, but I still didn't think we got enough time to know these characters. I wish they had allowed us to care more for the cast.
The creature was okay in the brief time we get to see it. I'm not lying, it might have four minutes of screen time...maybe. It isn't even shown until well after the hour mark!!!
It does seem like all the good action happens in the last twenty minutes or so, so at least it leaves you on a good note, but compared to a favorite of mine, Leviathan, this one just pales in comparison.
