Review of Deep Water (2022) by Theredsky — 01 Apr 2022
Sam Levinson writing this is what made me bump this film down from a 2/10 to a 1/10. It’s films like these that make me believe that he go extremely lucky in writing two good seasons of a television show but makes and writes bad movies.
Everything about this film is bad. The cinematography is weak and bland, the music is incredibly forgettable and Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas aren’t very good. What really destroyed this film was the story and the writing.
The writing and dialogue are atrocious. You have a 6 year old child who talks like a 40 year old man. The characters aren’t characters. They are hollow shells attempting to resemble characters but failing to do that and not because they are bad people.
They are incredibly morally flawed characters but that’s not what makes me hate them. They don’t have any clear identifiable personality. They are blank slates from beginning to end and I despise it.
This is true for all the characters. Jacob Elordi shows up at one point and the film makes a big deal about it but he’s gone after 30 minutes. I get that his purpose was to show Ana De Armas sleeping with other guys but why not give him a personality that rivals Ben Affleck’s if he had one.
The story here is stupid. It follows Affleck’s feelings on allowing his wife to sleep with other men so it can save their relationship but it doesn’t go anywhere. The characters don’t go on any journey.
They are the same at the end and not to mention how anticlimactic the story is. Don’t check this out at all. It was a complete waste of my time and it will be a complete waste of yours.
