Review of Deep Impact (1998) by Lizzie G — 03 Nov 2009
Its the lighter side to the end of the world! The emotional journey of the characters is touching in this film. Every time I see the final scene between the reporter and her father, my eyes well up. Unlike most disaster films, the plot does not completely revolve around the spectacle, it is the people.
Although the special effects are decent enough, and the asteroid is good visually. Morgan freeman is great as the president in this film, with his poetic tone and wisdom. It is probably the most optimistic presentation of disaster I have ever seen.
Maybe it does smooth over the terror of the end of the world somewhat... there is almost a passive acceptance of the worlds fate, chaos is referenced, but not explored in great detail. This relative calm could be attributed to the peaceful portrayal of the President.
This film may not be the most popular, but it's one I've watched again and again and still enjoyed!
