Review of Deep Impact (1998) by Gordon C — 16 Aug 2010
Sometimes you've got to wonder about these Hollywood execs. Did we really need 2 movies in the same year about a huge meteor hitting the Earth? (I refer, of course, to Armageddon, which if I remember rightly came out a couple of months after this one - but I could be wrong about that, and I can't be bothered looking it up).
This one is the better of the two films by some distance, but disaster movies of this type rarely shape up to approach masterpiece status, and it's no different here.
Maybe these films are some kind of pro-nuclear propaganda, aimed at undermining CND. "We'd better keep making nukes, boys, because if a big meteor comes along we'll need some bombs to throw at it.".
Never mind that that strategy almost certainly wouldn't work, anyway, but others better qualified than I have expounded elsewhere about the shortcomings of the physics depicted in movies like Deep Impact, and done a better job of it than I could.
Look into it sometime. It's good for a few laughs.
