Review of Deep Impact (1998) by Oxana . — 29 Oct 2010
I was positively surprised by how good this movie actually was.
While the special effects were nothing fancy, they weren't bad either (they didn't make me cringe in need to look away, certainly not).
The plot was built slowly, yet not too slowly, and it actually had touching parts that made you feel bad for the people involved. Although the characters came and went and it was hard to actually get to know them very well, you could definitely sympathize with them.
For a disaster movie... well, there wasn't a whole lot of that going on, but the impending threat and the eventual destruction was quite good. Also, it's nice that for once, all of mankind's attempts to save themselves pretty much failed (that doesn't happen all that often). Of course the sacrifice of few once again saves everyone else, but it was pretty well done.
Once again we get an almost pure American view into things, but at least it was mentioned that the disaster was global...
Not a bad movie. Maybe a bit more coherency and dedication in character introductions would have worked for the good of the movie, making you bond with the characters, but other than that, an entertaining watch.
